DECISION-MAKER

The third core competency set by NASPAA is to analyze, synthesize, think critically, solve problems, and make evidence-informed decisions in a complex and dynamic environment. This involves researching policy issues, evaluating them to make formal policy recommendations.
Course:
Public Budgeting Systems
City Budget Analysis
PROJECT 1
Public administrators are to research data to analyze it in order to make informed decisions.

In this course, we obtained theoretical and practical knowledge on how the budgeting and financial system works in the U.S. state and local governments.

For this group assignment, we developed two hypothesis questions. The first was if a city's investment in labor and workforce development affected their unemployment rate and the second was if a city that spends more on public safety has lower crime rates. We then researched, compared and analyzed how Baltimore, Boston and Orlando addressed unemployment and public safety.
Course:
Public Sector Labor Relations
Sexual Harassment
PROJECT 2
This course addressed labor relations in the public sector from the legal, political, policy and practical perspectives.

The final paper highlights sexual harassment environments within the public sector since the sector is primarily male-controlled and there is a tradition of not protecting victims or firing perpetrators.

I then took a deeper dive into the military environment since it is estimated that one in four women and one in 100 men experienced military trauma. This investigation would give enough information to military leaders so they could make informed decisions in changing their internal culture.
